Chew and his team, board, volunteers and staff embarked on a significant expansion of WLAM in 2004 by attempting to acquire a historic building within the International District to serve as a permanent home. The museum was able to buy and renovate the East Kong Yick building through a successful capital campaign of $23 million. It opened its doors in 2008 Chew decided to leave the museum after the campaign was over in order to start a new career as an expert in community history.
Chew’s recent publications include Community-Based Arts Organizations: A New Center of Gravity through Americans for the Arts outlining the emerging centrality of arts organizations as change agents in communities. in 2009 and Remembering Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes: The Legacy of Filipino American Labor Activism in 2012.
The University of Washington awarded Chew an honorary Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002. This recognition was due to his innovative work since leaving college. Chew was awarded the Ford Foundation’s “Leadership for a Changing World Award” in 2004. In 2005, the American Association of Museums placed Chew on their “Centennial Honor Roll” for the work he did to recast the museum as a tool for fighting for social justice.

In 1975, Chew started as a reporter for the Examiner. He was promoted to editor in 1977. He covered events in the area, as well as social and political concerns of residents of the International District. This included substandard housing, health care for the elderly and threats to historic neighborhoods from redevelopment. Chew’s involvement through the Examiner and his connections to the community helped him develop his skills in community organizing.
Chew began the Chinese Oral History Project in the 1980s, collecting many interviews from elderly Chinese Americans. This project was a traveling exhibit that led to Chew being hired in 1991 as the director of the Wing Luke Asian Museum (WLAM).
Since 2008 Chew has owned and operated Chew Communications, a community history and resource development consulting firm in Seattle. From 2008 to 2010 he was scholar in residence in the museology department at the University of Washington. Presently he also serves as Executive Director of the International Community Health Services Foundation in Seattle, to maintain access to affordable health care in the community.
