Romulus Buia, a former Romanian football player who is currently a manager, was born 15 June 1970 in Baia Mare. Because of his similarities to Luis Figo, he was nicknamed “Figo From Berceni” by Rocar Bucuresti fans who played home games at the “Drumul Gazarului” field in Bucharest’s Berceni Neighborhood. His son Darius Buia also plays football.
1998 was the end of his contract with Universitatea Craiova. He couldn’t find a new one with a top club so he played for Progresul Somcuta Mare in Romania’s fourth division.
In 2002, he was signed by Politehnica Timișoara, where he stayed until 2005, before being sacked by the new Timișoara coach, Cosmin Olăroiu and subsequently joining Pandurii Târgu Jiu.
In the season 2005-06 he played at FCM Reșița in Liga II before signing for AS Covaci in Romanian Liga IV.
Buia was the 1992-93 FC Baia Mare player, but was later transferred to Germinal Ekeren (3550), Belgium’s national team during the season. After two years in Belgium, he was loaned to Romania at Universitatea Craiova. He made his debut in the Divizia A Romanian top league. He signed a contract with Sportul Studentesc in Bucharest and then returned to Ekeren for the second half of 1995.

FC Barcelona was very attentive to him in the 1991-92 season. Johan Cruijff (the Catalan side coach) invited him to train with his team in 1992. However, the transfer didn’t happen.
