While living with an English-speaking Anglican family, he was one of 27 Cree children. He stayed there for ten more years and completed his French schooling. He attended a meeting about the negotiations between Cree officials and Government officials regarding constitutional and resource rights. This sparked his interest to pursue a law degree. He was the first Cree to earn a Quebec law degree. Saganash speaks Cree, French, and English fluently.

Saganash was a prominent Cree figure within a riding that had many aboriginal voters. NDP Quebec lieutenant Thomas Mulcair personally supported Saganash, who called him a “very important candidate”. He was elected in the 2011 federal election to represent Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou.

In the 2015 Canadian federal election, Saganash was reelected to a second term.

By July 2018, Saganash had decided not to run in the 43rd Canadian federal election.

Saganash, who was a candidate for the NDP leadership to replace Jack Layton, announced his candidacy on Friday September 16th 2011. It is believed that he was the first Aboriginal leader to run for leadership in a major Canadian party. On February 9, 2012, he announced his resignation citing illness in the family and lack of confidence in his campaign. Saganash declared that he would back Mulcair as NDP leader on March 7, 2012.

Diom Romeo Saganash (born October 28, 1961) is a Canadian Cree lawyer and politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Quebec riding of Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou from 2011 to 2019. He was elected as a New Democratic Party member to the House of Commons during the 2011 federal election. He succeeded Yvon Levesque of Bloc Quebecois. In the 2015 federal election, he was reelected. He did not stand for reelection in 2019.

Saganash created the Cree Nation Youth Council in 1985. From 1990 to 1993, he was Vice-Grand Chief of The Grand Council of the Crees of James Bay. He later became the director of Quebec relations as well as international affairs for more than ten years. Saganash was the chairman of the James Bay Advisory Committee on the Environment from 1997 to 2000.

After an incident where he was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight from Montreal to Val-d’Or for intoxication, Saganash took sick leave in October 2012 for the treatment of alcohol dependency. Saganash cited the death of his “friend and mentor” Jack Layton, as well as the “profound scars” he received while in the residential school system as the reasons for his dependency. He completed his treatment in November 2012, and returned for the start of the House’s first session of 2013.
