He was 15 years old when he began working as an assistant for Kir Bulychov, a science fiction writer. He enrolled at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography in 1984 as a script writer.
Kachanov made his debut as a director of films at the age of 24 with Don’t ask Me About a Thing in 1991. Riga, Latvia was the shooting location. This film was the last to be made in the USSR prior to its dissolution. Its premiere didn’t take place until 1995 due to economic difficulties in Russia.
