He started playing in youth football teams at the local DSV Leoben. He left Germany at the age of 15 to continue his football grooming with Bavaria’s TSV1860 Munchen.

Linz moved to France on loan in 2004 after leaving Austria. He failed to make a name for himself and returned to Austria after six months to play for SK Sturm Graz to the end of the season.

In the 2007–08 UEFA Cup, Linz netted five goals before his team was eventually ousted by SV Werder Bremen, and added 11 in the league, relegating veteran goal-getter João Tomás to the bench as Braga finished seventh and again reached the UEFA Cup, through the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Linz returned to the national side in time for UEFA Euro 2008 on home soil, starting in all three of Austria’s matches during the tournament but finishing goalless as the nation crashed out at the first hurdle.

Linz was able to taste success with his new team when he won both the cup and the Bundesliga in 2002-03. Linz moved to the southern suburbs of the capital on loan to VfB Admira Wacker Modling a year later.
