Govender is sixth- generation South African of South Indian descent. He entered St Paul’s College in Grahamstown in 1983 to study for ministry in the Church of the Province of Southern Africa.
He was the priest-in-charge at Christ Church, West Didsbury, South Manchester, and Area Dean Of Withington upon his arrival in England. He was elected Dean of Manchester in 2006. The Chapter of Manchester Cathedral’s Dean is based in Manchester. He was the first black cathedral dean in England and the third- highest ranking black or Asian priest in the Church of England at the time of his appointment. His goal is to make the inner city more welcoming for all races.
Govender acted as Tom Hanks’ replacement in a fake Da Vinci Code movie poster. This was to promote a “Da Vinci Code Mass,” at the cathedral, which is intended to address the issues raised in the controversial book and the movie. Rogers Morgan Govender MBE, born 29 June 1960 in South Africa, is an Anglican priest. He has been Dean at Manchester since 2006. He is from South Africa and was the first black cathedral dean in England.
Govender was ordained priest in 1986 and deacon in 1985. From 1988 to 1993, he served as priest in charge of St Mary’s Church, Greyville. In 1993, he was transferred from Greyville to St Matthew’s Hayfields. He was then rector, and later St Thomas’s Musgrave Road. In 1997, he graduated from University of Natal with a Bachelor of Theology degree (BTh). After 15 years of service to the Diocese of Natal, he emigrated to England in 2002.
In 2018 Govender was awarded an MBE for his services to interfaith relations and to the community in Manchester.
