He is well-known for his worst bowling performance in Test match cricket.
In 1985, Wijesuriya was recalled by Sri Lanka to face India. Wijesuriya was a key wicket taker in the first ODI. He removed Mohammad Azharuddin and Krish Srikkanth early. However, his eight overs cost 56 runs, and India won by two wickets. However, he was kept, and he bowled nine overs for 54 runs during the second match.
He was still included in the team that toured Pakistan 1985-86, despite his inconsistent performances. He was not wicket-worthy in his first two Tests despite playing 48 overs. Then he finally got his first Test wicket at Karachi. Abdul Qadir, a fellow spinner, was caught by Sidath Wettery, giving him a Test bowling score. At the end of the match, the average was 297, which was the highest ever for a bowler. Wijesuriya had previously been able to catch West Indian Rawl Lewis with just one wicket, but Lewis’ bowling average dropped in 2008. He also posted his best ODI bowling performance on that tour, scoring two runs for 25 in five overs and fighting to score 12 runs, even though the top order was broken up by Mohsin Kamal, Mudassar Nazar and Abdul Qadir. Sri Lanka lost the match to Sri Lanka by 89 runs despite Wijesuriya’s credible performance. They lost the ODI series 4-0 and the Test series 2-0.
