In June 2000, he returned to Norway and Lillestrom SK. He played 26 league matches for Lillestrom during his time there. Helland was signed to strengthen Fredrikstad’s team in December 2002 after Fredrikstad was promoted in 2002 to the Norwegian First Division. Fredrikstad were again promoted and Helland was back with his third team in the Norwegian Premier League. He scored Fredrikstad’s first goal in twenty years in the top flight Norwegian football when Molde FK lost 1-0 at Aker Stadion.

Helland is originally from Austrheim, and was a member of various youth teams at SK Brann. In 1989, Helland represented Norway in under-15 matches. In 1993, he made his debut on the senior team of the Norwegian Premier League. He was a sub in the game against Rosenborg BK (Lerkendal) in which he won 4-0. Only one game was left in the spring season, but he played every game until the end of the season. This gave him a total of thirteen league games. Between 1994 and 1995, he also played 22 matches in the under-21 team. Helland was a part of Brann’s second place in the Norwegian Premier League in 1997. This was Brann’s highest league position since 1975. Helland made his debut that year and played only two games for Norway’s national team. Helland was a member of Brann from 1997 to 1999, playing 206 games and scoring 21 goals. He played in 154 games and scored 15 goals in the Norwegian Premier League.
Helland’s contract at Brann expired in December 1999 and he was offered a contract with a few Norwegian clubs. Helland decided to leave Norway and signed a half-season contract at Danish club Brondby IF. This was where his Norwegian Age Hareide colleague had just been appointed head coach. Helland was part of Hareide’s Scandinavian venture during that transfer window and arrived at Brondby with Magnus Svensson and Krister Nordin. Hareide brought Helland in to replace Brondby’s “risky” central defender Vragel da Silva, in the zone defense of Hareide’s new 4-3-3 formation. Helland made his Brondby debut in March 2000. He played 12 of Brondby’s remaining league games in the 1999-2000 Danish Superliga season. Brondby came in second. Per Bjerregaard, the chairman of Brondby, criticized Helland’s cooperation with Per Nielsen and Helland at the end of the season. Helland was then subject to general criticism by the Danish media. Helland’s contract was terminated in summer 2000.
