Roel Pieper is one of the most popular and richest Entrepreneur who was born on April 13, 1956 in Vlaardingen, South Holland, Netherlands. Pieper was born in Vlaardingen (April 13, 1956), the son of an engineer working at a car maker. Pieper lost his father when he was 20 years old, and on his 18th birthday suffered a motoring injury that ended his basketball career with the Juventus Schiedam. Pieper says that both of these experiences gave him a sense of toughness. Pieper received his MSc-Ir – degree in computer science from Delft University of Technology in 1980.

Pieper was invited to return to the Netherlands in 1998. He was invited by Cor Boonstra to be a board member of Philips, the Dutch electronics giant. Pieper, who was representing Philips, became involved in Jan Sloot’s claimed coding technology in May 1999. Officially, Philips decided not to use this technology. Pieper decided to support the invention, first as a private investor, and then as a board member. Sloot’s claims of huge compression are mathematically impossible. Shortly after demonstrating his technology to 20 investors and technology companies, the inventor suffered a heart attack. Pieper was fired by Philips after one year. He received an undisclosed severance package.

Pieper also independently took part in more than 30 IT businesses all as investor and or adviser. On 1 September 1999 Pieper was appointed as a professor of Electronic Commerce, a newly created chair at the faculty of informatics and technology management of the University of Twente. Pieper ended as a professor of business administration and corporate governance at the university of Twente in 2013.

In 2001, Pieper entered into the board of advisors of Nearshore IT services company, Levi9 Global Sourcing and conducted a study requested by minister Tineke Netelenbos for setting up a system for road pricing, called Mobimiles. Later that year he became president of Connekt, an organisation for addressing road tolling issues in the Netherlands. He presided as Chairman for seven years.

Pieper, ex-minister for economy Hans Wijers, established Twinning in 1998. This incubator was designed to help entrepreneurs start their businesses, especially in the IT sector. Ninety million Guilders of government subsidies were paid to the project. As the Dotcom bubble burst the ministry decided that Twinning should be sold to a group private investors. More than 35 of the 50 companies that Twinning began are still in operation, some with great success.

He worked in Software AG for ten years after graduation. In the United States, he was the Chief Technology Officer for the US Branch. After leaving Software AG, he was chosen to become the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Unix System Laboratories in America, a division within Bell Laboratories. Roel then became the president/CEO of Ungermann-Bass. Ungermann was tied with Tandem through an earlier White Knight agreement. Ungermann resigned following his term. Roel renamed UB Networks, the company that was a subsidiary to Tandem Computers. Roel restructured UB Networks’ research investments in ATM technology. This was popular at the time and Roel decided to continue Ralph Ungermann’s previous successful investments and leadership of Ethernet technology. In 1993, Ungermann-Bass created the first Virtual Network Architecture (VNA). Roel sold the ATM business to Cisco. After Pieper joined Tandem Computers in 1996 as CEO, UB Networks was successfully sold to Newbridge Networks. Pieper was elected president and CEO at Tandem Computers in 1996. He was instrumental in the company’s repositioning. Pieper was the leader of Tandem Computers, which was sold to Compaq in 1997. Pieper also became a member on the Compaq executive board. Pieper earned a reputation for being a skilled restructurer during his time in the US. Pieper was instrumental in reorganizing USL, UB, and Tandem Computer and selling them to key players in the sector.

At the end of 1999, Pieper founded Insight Capital Partners Europe, a private investment fund for IT-businesses, later operating under the name of Favonius Ventures, particularly in the field of e-commerce. In November 2000 he became Chairman of the Board of Lernout & Hauspie, a Flemish company specializing in speech recognition technology. Pieper was instrumental in uncovering a financial scandal at this company, which took place in the period 1996-1999, before he joined the company. In cooperation with the Belgian authorities, Pieper helped to secure information that ultimately led to the formal charging of the founders Jo Lernout and Pol Hauspie. Pieper left as Chairman of the board after the shareholders decided to appoint a new CEO and board.

In the summer of 2008, Pieper was helmsman on the Favonius yacht (Swan 82) and he successfully claimed the Swan World Cup in Porto Cervo, Italy. Together with his longtime associate and navigator Roy Heiner, Pieper finally won this event after various attempts. The hobby of sailing and regattas were given to Pieper by his father who taught him sailing and racing at a very young age. Pieper’s father bought a small yacht called Favonius in 1974 and as a remembrance Pieper always tried to use that name as part of his memories of his father. In 2013 Pieper has assisted in creating the K3 Foundation in Portland, Oregon, USA. The target of the foundation is to restore and maintain the globally well known sailing yacht Kialoa III. The yacht has successfully returned to the racing scene in 2015.
