Wright’s uncle Elmo Wright holds the University of Houston records in receiving yards and touchdowns. He was also a first-round draft pick for the Kansas City Chiefs back in 1971. Wright is a cousin to former Longhorns defensive lineman Cedric Woodard who played previously for the Seattle Seahawks.
Wright played defensive tackle in all 13 games. He was awarded consensus second-team All-Big 12 honors, and the Longhorns’ Outstanding Lineman award. Wright recorded 80 tackles and a team record of 7.5 sacks. He also had 12 tackles for losses (tied for second), 30 pressures and three passes batted down. He recorded a total 31 tackles, three tackles, four tackles to loss, and eight pressures in four games against Top 25 opponents. Wright, a sophomore, was a crucial member of a defense that ranked ninth in NCAA pass defense (177.3 ypg), fifth in total defense (329.8ypg), and 32nd overall in scoring defense (21.5ppg).
In 2005, Wright started all 13 games and posted 46 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 15 pressures, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was a finalist for the Lombardi Award and tabbed First-team All-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Associated Press. To end his career, he won the national championship in a Rose Bowl victory over Southern California.
Wright was not healthy enough to play during his rookie season. He spent all of 2006 on the non-football injury list.
Wright was a student at the University of Texas. He played for Mack Brown’s Texas Longhorns football teams from 2002 to 2005. He was a true freshman in 2002 and saw action in 13 of the games, as well as starting nine. The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and The Sporting News selected him as a First-Team Freshman All-America Selection. The league’s coaches, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Houston Chronicle, awarded him Big 12 Defensive Young Man of the Year honors. He was awarded the Outstanding Defensive Newcomer award by the Longhorns and ranked seventh among true freshmen in tackles (65), tackles for loss (13) as well as sacks (4.5), and quarterback pressures (15). He was tied for fourth on the Texas freshman lists for sacks and was in a tie for third in tackles for losses. Wright was an integral part of the Longhorns defense, which ranked eighth in NCAA pass defense (165.2 ypg), seventh in the nation for pass efficiency defense (96.1 Rtg), eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.3 PPG) and 16th in total defense (307.7 JPG). Wright was particularly impressive in Big 12 action. He recorded 52 tackles (22 solo), 13 tackles and 13 tackles for loss.

Rodrique Charles Wright, born July 31, 1984, is an American former professional and college football player. He was a defensive end for the National Football League and the Canadian Football League (CFL), for five seasons. He was a college football player for the University of Texas and was a consensus All-American. He was selected by the NFL’s Miami Dolphins in the seventh round. He also played for CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. Wright is currently the defensive-line coach at UTSA.
As a senior, Wright was awarded USA Today’s first-team All-America high school honors. He was also an All-American in Parade magazine and was rated by Student Sports among the top 10 national defensive line prospects. As a senior, he was All-Greater Houston, Class 5A All-State and All-District. He was named the Greater Houston Touchdown Club Player-of-the Year in 2001. His 2001 season included 104 tackles and six sacks. Wright was a member of the 2002 U.S. Army All-American Bowl along with fellow Texas Longhorns Justin Blalock and Kasey Studdard.
Wright played in 11 games, making 10 starts, at defensive tackle as a junior in 2004. Despite battling an ankle injury for much of the season, he posted 36 tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss and seven quarterback pressures. He recorded 16 tackles, one tackle for loss and two pressures in five games versus Top 25 foes.
