Rodney MacDonald is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 2, 1972 in Inverness, Scotland, United Kingdom. He worked as a senior high school teacher for the Strait Regional School Board, and was active in many community organizations. He was 27 years old when he was elected as the youngest MLA in Nova Scotia’s History. He went on to hold several high-profile Cabinet posts within the Nova Scotia government. He was 34 when he became Nova Scotia’s 26th Premier. He balanced Nova Scotia’s budget every year of his term, decreased the Provincial debt, cut taxes, and made investments in key economic areas. MacDonald is involved in many areas of Nova Scotia’s economy, including Business Development and the Offshore Petroleum Board of Nova Scotia. He also serves as CEO of The Gaelic College/Colaisde na Gaidhlig.

MacDonald was elected first to the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia during the 1999 provincial election. He represented the riding of Inverness on western Cape Breton Island. In 2003, he was re-elected. He was a member of Premier John Hamm’s cabinet, where he held various ministerial portfolios, including Tourism, Culture & Heritage and Health Promotion. He was also responsible for Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation Act and the Heritage Property Act.

Following Hamm’s September 2005 announcement of his intention to retire, MacDonald committed to running for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia. The leadership race culminated in MacDonald winning the party’s leadership on a second ballot on February 11,

2006. He was sworn in as Premier of Nova Scotia on February 24, succeeding Hamm. He is the second youngest premier in Nova Scotia’s history.

MacDonald stepped down as Nova Scotia PC Leader on June 24, 2009. He announced on August 5, 2009 that he would be resigning his seat in the legislature before the fall session began. He officially resigned on September 10, 2009.

MacDonald has performed his fiddle music across Atlantic Canada, Central Canada, and the Northeastern United States. MacDonald is also a skilled step dancer. He started dancing when he was four years old, after being taught by his parents. MacDonald performed his first public performance at age eight at Sydney’s Mayflower Shopping Mall. He also began learning fiddle lessons from Kinnon Beaton at the age of 12. To date, he has released two albums: Dancer’s Delight (1995), and Traditionally Rockin’ (1997) with his cousin Glenn Graham. He was nominated for two East Coast Music Awards nominations in 1998. MacDonald was also featured on The Beaton Family of Mabou 2004: Cape Breton Fiddle and Piano Music, as well as many other compilations.

MacDonald was born and raised in Inverness in Nova Scotia, but he spent his childhood in Mabou, Cape Breton (Nassau). He was active in track and field, hockey, and baseball during his youth. He was a Midget AAA, Junior, and Senior hockey player. Later, he was a coach at various levels. In 1990, he graduated from Mabou Consolidated School. In 1994, he graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor in Science in Physical Education. He also received a minor English and a Nova Scotia Teaching License.

In May 2006, after a short session, MacDonald dissolved the legislature, calling an election for June 13, 2006. MacDonald’s Progressive Conservatives won a minority government in the 2006 general election and MacDonald retained his seat.
