Lawler has been to the World Championship finals twice. He qualified in 1995 against Marcus Campbell, and then lost to Peter Ebdon in Round 32 at the Crucible. In 1996, he qualified again and beat Dennis Taylor, a former World Champion. He then defeated John Parrott, 1991 World Champion, 10-6 at the Crucible before losing the final 16 to Dave Harold 13 frames to 6. This was his best World Championship performance to date.
In 1997, Lawler reached the semi-final of the Benson and Hedges Championship, losing a final frame decider against Andy Hicks.
His best result in the UK Championship came in 1998, where he beat Jamie Burnett and John Read, before losing to Matthew Stevens in the last 16.

In 1990, he became a professional. He reached the Dubai Classic last 32, but lost 2-5 to Rex Williams, a former World Billiards Champion. His first season was quite successful. The Classic Quarter Finals were his next step. He beat John Virgo 5-3 and Joe Johnson 5-3, respectively, before losing to Mike Hallett 2-5. In 1996, his best performance in a ranking tournament was when he reached final of the International Open. He beat Stephen Hendry 5-3 in round 2, but lost to Joe Johnson 5-3 in round 2.
Lawler turned professional in 1990. He reached the 1996 International Open final, losing 3-9 to John Higgins. Lawler also won one minor ranking tournament, Event 3 of the 2012/2013 Players Tour Championship, where he defeated Marco Fu 4-2.
In 1995, Lawler reached the semi-final of the Malta Masters, beating future UK Champion Matthew Stevens in the Quarter Final, however he lost in the semi- final to the home favourite Tony Drago. He followed up this result by reaching the last 16 of the Grand Prix, beating the aforementioned Tony Drago in the last 32, before being whitewashed 5–0 by Stephen Hendry.
