Moran was a kart driver from 1990 to 1994. He made the transition to cars in 1994 through Skip Barber Racing School. In 1996, he made his professional racing debut with the Barber Dodge Pro Series. He finished 10th. In 1997, he was sixth but fell to 11th in 1998. In 1998, he made his Toyota Atlantic debut. Moran split his time in 1999 between Barber Dodge, and Toyota Atlantic. He joined Toyota Atlantic full time in 2000 and was fifth in points for P-1 Racing. He began his season in 2001 with Condor Motorsports, but switched to Cobb Racing halfway through the season. He won his first series win at Laguna Seca, and was eighth in points. He returned to series driving in 2002 for Sigma Autosport. He was fifth in points, with a win at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Moran spent 2003 out of professional motorsports but returned to Atlantics in 2004 and made five starts with Polestar Motor Racing. In 2005, he made three Busch North Series races starts as well as two Atlantics starts. He also drove in the Infiniti Pro Series Freedom 100, but his gearbox failed after just four laps.
Moran started three times in the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2006. From 2006 to 2009, he also appeared on road courses in the Busch North Series.
Shortly before the 2015 Grand Prix of Long Beach it was announced that Moran would drive in the race with Dale Coyne Racing, stepping into the seat formerly held by Carlos Huertas. His IndyCar debut came nearly 10 years after his last Atlantics start. However, he broke his thumb during contact with the wall during Friday practice and was replaced for the rest of the race weekend by Conor Daly.
