Robin van der Laan is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on September 5, 1968 in Schiedam, South Holland, Netherlands. Robertus Petrus van der Laan, a former Dutch footballer and manager, was born 5 September 1968. He is currently the Newcastle Town manager for Northern Premier League Division One South.

After impressing at trial, he was signed by Port Vale of the English Second Division in February 1991 for a payment of PS80,000. John Rudge, his manager, converted Van der Laan from a striker to a midfielder. Van der Laan is instantly recognisable by his long, blonde hair. He quickly became a favorite figure among Vale fans. His bustling style, midfield engine, and hustle made it easy for him to adapt quickly into English football. In 18 games, he scored four goals.

Vale went on to win promotion into the First Division in 1993–94, following a second-place finish. He was again a key player at Vale Park in 1994–95, as the club retained their second tier status. However his good looks and popularity with the Vale fans saw him targeted by the more thuggish element of rivals Stoke City and he was punched in the face whilst inside a pizza and kebab house in Newcastle-under-Lyme on 18 June 1995.

Van der Laan signed for Barnsley in summer 1998 for a fee of £325,000. He played twenty games for the First Division club in 1998–99, scoring twice. He made 37 appearances in 1999–2000, as the “Tykes” reached the play-offs, only to lose 4–2 to Ipswich Town in the final. He played 22 games in 2000–01, before a recurring knee injury he picked up in December 2000 forced him to retire from professional football in March 2001, at the age of 32. He later played for Newcastle Town, after coming out of retirement in September 2003.

In 1991-92, he made 49 appearances and scored six goals. His contribution was not enough to see Vale relegated. However, due to the creation the Premier League, Vale became the Second Division. In 1992-93, he made 53 appearances and scored ten goals. This helped the “Valiants”, to the League Trophy Final as well as the play-off Final. In the cup final at Wembley, Vale defeated Stockport County by 2-1. However, West Bromwich Albion won the play-off final 3-0. He was sometimes unable to make the starting 11 due to the central midfield form of rivals Andy Porter and Ian Taylor. In February 1993, he submitted a transfer request to be allowed to play for first-team football.
