Shroot is eligible to play international football in Northern Ireland as his grandmother is from the country. He wrote to Lawrie Sanchez, his Wimbledon manager, to inform him that he had international ambitions for Northern Ireland. He was capped at the under-19 and under-20 levels and was part of the starting XI of the Northern Ireland Under-19s in all three matches in the 2007 Milk Cup Elite Section. Northern Ireland reached the final with a 2-2 draw against Turkey, and a 3-2 victory over Chile Under-19s. They fell at the last hurdle and were defeated by Israel 4-1. Shroot made his debut in the under-21s in November 2008. He played the first half against their Scottish counterparts. He went on to win four caps at this level.
After impressing during the first half of the 2008–09 campaign, Shroot attracted interest from Birmingham City, and signed a 2 ⁄2 -year contract with the club in January 2009. He made his first-team debut for Birmingham City in the FA Cup third round match against Wolverhampton Wanderers shortly after signing for the club. It was to be Shroot’s only first-team appearance for the club. He was loaned out on three separate occasions during his time at Birmingham; to Walsall, Burton Albion and Cheltenham Town respectively. Shroot was released by Birmingham City when his contract expired at the end of the 2010–11 season. In July 2011, Shroot signed for League One club Stevenage on a two-year contract following a successful trial. He has also represented Northern Ireland at under-21 level.
Shroot joined Burton Albion on a season-long loan on 1 July 2009, though Birmingham retained the option to recall him in the January 2010 transfer window. He made his debut for the club on the opening day of the season, playing the first 67 minutes of a 3–1 defeat away to Shrewsbury Town. The player returned to Birmingham when the loan was terminated prematurely “in the best interests of both parties” on 6 October 2009, though formally he remained a Burton player until the transfer window opened in January 2010.
Shroot was born in London. Shroot began his football career at Wimbledon as an eight year old. He remained with Wimbledon until he was released at age 16. After leaving Wimbledon, he joined Staines Town’s academy. It was run in association with Kingston College. In the 2006 Middlesex Premier Cup final, Shroot scored the only goal. This was the first time that the club had made it to the final. He also helped the team reach the Southern Youth League championship playoff and (as Kingston College), the final of the ESSA U-18 Colleges’ Trophy. Shroot was not a member of Staines’ Isthmian League Premier Division, but he was occasionally used as a substitute and scored in the final when the club won Southern Combination Cup. This is a first-team competition.

After leaving Wimbledon, Shroot spent some time at Staines Town’s Academy, where he played a minor role in the first-team during 2005-06. Shroot joined AFC Wimbledon in September 2006. He made sporadic appearances during the 2006-07 season. He was initially loaned to Harrow Borough for a one-month loan. Later, the loan was extended to three more months. In January 2008, he returned to his parent club to play a role in the team that won promotion to Conference South. Shroot signed for Harrow in September 2008 on non-contract terms after failing to reach an agreement at AFC Wimbledon.
Shroot joined AFC Wimbledon in September 2006. He was also a Premier member of the Isthmian League. Shroot was described by the club as a “skilful, ball- playing winger who loves to challenge opponents and deliver telling crosses”. His league debut was a success. He played 65 minutes in the 2-1 win over Ashford Town (Middlesex), 26 September 2006. He made five substitute appearances and two starts in the 2006-07 league season without scoring. Shroot was initially on loan for one month to Harrow Borough in November 2007. Shroot made his debut at Harrow Borough on November 10, 2007, in a Margate defeat 2-1. Although his time with Harrow was interrupted by injury, his three-month stint saw him score six league goals in ten games. Shroot ended the 2007-08 season scoring six more league goals for AFC Wimbledon, with five starts and seven substitute appearances. This contributed to the club’s promotion into the Conference South. Shroot’s contract was terminated at the close of that season. He declined an offer from the club and he was made available for transfer. Terry Brown, manager of the club felt that Shroot’s representatives didn’t want him to remain with them.
Under the Bosman ruling, because of the player’s age, compensation would be payable when he signed a contract with another club, but he would be allowed to play on non-contract terms, and in September 2008 he rejoined Harrow Borough on such a basis, with a view to regaining fitness following a summer operation. At Harrow he was reunited with player-coach Jamie Lawrence, with whom he had worked for three years at Lawrence’s Tooting academy for semi- professional footballers. Though he failed to score in his first four games back with Harrow, he followed up with nine goals in eight league games, performances which attracted interest from potential purchasers and attention from opposition defenders alike.
