He is the former President of Lombardy. He was the leader of the Northern League party, which sought autonomy or independence for Northern Italy and Padania. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic in Lombard constituencies from 1992 to 2013. From 1994 to 1995, he was the Interior Minister of Italy. He also served as the Minister of Interior from 2008-11.

Maroni revealed to Vanity Fair in September 2006 that he illegally downloaded music and believes music should be free and available for everyone. Maroni said that authors should still have the right to prevent their work being distributed widely on the Internet. Maroni stated that his confession was meant to stimulate a debate in Parliament about the possibility of changing Italy’s copyright laws. After the 2008 electoral victory of the centre-right coalition in Italy, Maroni assumed the office of Minister of the Interior in the Berlusconi IV Cabinet.

Following the forced retirement of Umberto Bossi due to his alleged involvement in a scandal, Maroni was elected Political Secretary of the Northern League at its Congress in Assago (on 30 June and 1 July 2012). After the election on 24 February 2013, he became the ninth President of Lombardy.

From 1994 to 1995, he was also Minister of Interior in the first Silvio Berlusconi cabinet. In Berlusconi’s second and third cabinets, he was also Minister of Labour and Welfare between 2001 and May 2006.
