Roberta Rudnick Biography

Birthday Aug 23
Birth Year 1958

Roberta Rudnick is one of the most popular and richest Geologist who was born on August 23, 1958 in Portland, Oregon, United States. Roberta L. Rudnick, born 1958, is an American earth scientist. She is also a professor of geology at University of California Santa Barbara. In 2010, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and was presented the Dana Medal from the Mineralogical Society of America. Rudnick is an expert on the continental crust and lithosphere.

In 2000, she joined the University of Maryland College Park. She began to explore the possibility of using lithium isotopes for studying near-surface continental processes when she arrived in Maryland. To study the effect of weathering on continental crust composition, she used lithium isotopes. She was able to track recycling in crusts as well as other diffusional processes on earth using lithium isotopes. She showed that reactive transport can cause kinetic isotope fragmentation. She examined ancient glacial tills to show that they were rich in magnesium and iron. Geoneutrinos was also her focus. She helped USArray and Sudbury Neutrino Observatory physicists determine whether neutrinos are from the core, crust, or mantle of the earth.

Rudnick was editor-in-chief for Chemical Geology between 2000 and 2010. Rudnick was named Department Chair in 2012. Rudnick was appointed Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2015. To estimate the Moho temperature, Rudnick is currently working on the concentrations of heat-producing elements (potassium thorium anduranium) within the continental crust.

Rudnick was born in Portland, Oregon. In 1980, Rudnick completed her undergraduate studies at Portland State University in earth sciences. She was just fifty miles away from Mount St. Helens’ eruption. Rudnick graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received her Masters in Geology. She was a geochemist who worked in Van Horn, Texas on the metamorphic rocks. Her master’s thesis was entitled “The Petrography, Geochemistry, and Tectonic Favourities of Meta-Igneous Rocks From the Precambrian Carrizo Mountain Group”. Rudnick received her PhD from the Australian National University in 1988. Stuart Ross Taylor was Rudnick’s supervisor and he studied the upper continental crust. Rudnick was motivated to examine the deep crust below and decided to focus on granulites. She determined the chemical composition of xenoliths and their depths. As a student, she used the Sensitive high resolution ion microprobe SHRIMP to date ancient zircons. She discovered that granulites had low levels of soluble elements.

Rudnick was named a von Humboldt fellow postdoctoral fellow at Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. In 1989, she was appointed a research fellow at the Australian National University. She worked closely with Dave Fountain and Ian Jackson on the lower continental crust. Rudnick was an Assistant Professor at Harvard University in 1994. She was promoted to Associate in 1997. Her research on the evolution and formation of the continental crust was cited more than a thousand times. The andesitic composition in continental crust cannot be created by basaltic magmatism. This is because the building blocks of the crust are not compatible with the structure. The depletion was explained by several theories. One theory suggested that the formation of the magnesium- and iron-rich lower crust is caused by tectonic plates. Another thought was that chemical weathering results from exposure to air and water. A third theory proposed that the basaltic oceanic and subduction crusts melt. Rudnick believes that all three theories can explain the paradox in the crust’s composition. Subduction causes ocean crust to drop down. This results in a series volcanoes which are initially basaltic but later change to non- basalt. The bottom is where high magnesium rocks are concentrated.
