Robert Saxton was born and raised in London. He began composing at six years old. Bryanston School was where he received his education. In his early years, he received guidance from Benjamin Britten (and Elisabeth Lutyens) and then he studied at Oxford and Cambridge Universities with Robin Holloway and Robert Sherlaw Johnson. He also studied with Luciano Berio. At 21 years old, he was awarded the Gaudeamus International Composers Award. He was 21 when he received the Fulbright Arts Fellowship to America. While in residence at Princeton, he also worked as an assistant for Oliver Knussen at Tanglewood. He co-directed the Hoy composers’ class with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in 1995. He was the artistic director at Opera Lab and directed the Dartington International Summer Schools composers course on multiple occasions. He was also a regular participant in the BBC TV 4 (digital), Proms broadcasting commentary group and was a Southbank Centre board member for nine years. He is the Purcell School’s Composer-in-Association.
Robert Saxton was Head of Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (1991-1997) and Head of Contemporary Music at The Royal Academy of Music (1998) to 1999. He is currently the Professor of Composition at Worcester College, Oxford. He is also a Tutorial Fellow in Music at Oxford University and a Trustee for the Mendelssohn/Boise Foundation. In 1992, he was awarded a doctorate in music from Oxford. From 1972 to 1998, his music was published by Chester/Music Sales and then by UYMP/Ricordi. His recordings have been published on the Sony Classical and Hyperion labels, as well as Signum, NMC, Signum, Signum, Signum, Signum, and Divine Art labels. He was made an Hon Fellow at St Catharine’s College in Cambridge in 2015. [2]
