He began his career as a clerk in the Waltons menswear shop in Sydney at the age of 18. He was soon a DJ at Kings Cross’ 45 Club on weekends, and was also followed by other venues in the harbour. He brought “New York garage and Chicago records” and became a ‘benevolent Godfather’ to the obscure Australian dance music scene.
Racic produced “Thief”, a single by Rockmelons, with the band members Bryon Jones, Jonathon Jones and Raymond Medhurst (see Tales of the City).
He recalled in 1987 how he began remixing. “I was tired of the way that some 12-inchers presented themselves… I wanted them to be more exciting, so I bought a reel to reel recorder and sat down to start editing. One of his first remixes was of Nona Henderx’ “I Want You”, from The Art of Defense (1984), and was played by Tim Ritchie on 2 JJJ Radio.

Robert Racic, born 8 January 1964 and died 25 October 1996) was an Australian DJ/record producer. Although he was an influential figure in the local electronic and house music scene, he was not well-known internationally. Racic was the producer of several Billboard top 10 dance hits, including “Greater Reward” by Volition Records’ Severed Heads and Boxcar’s “Freemason”, Insect and “Gas Stop” songs. In 1996, he died from a brain virus called JC virus that caused progressive multifocal encephalopathy.
Racic began working with the experimental music group Severed Heads in 1986. He collaborated with Tom Ellard on their sixth album, “Come Visit The Big Bigot” (September 1986). Racic would remix tracks for the dancefloor market. He edited and mixed tracks for Bad Mood Guy, the group’s seventh album (October 1987) in May 1993.
