Pressley’s 1997 abbreviated Cup race saw him return full-time to the Jasper team in 1998, where he achieved a career-best finish of third at Texas Motor Speedway. Pressley was 32nd in points despite being temporarily replaced by Hut Stricklin because of injuries. 1999 was difficult for Pressley and his company, who failed to qualify six times and frequently had difficulty finishing races. In 2002 he had a one race deal with Melling Racing for the Daytona 500 and locked himself in by qualifying speed on Pole Day, Qualifying 5th overall with the same car they had qualified 3rd or better on the 2001 restrictor plate tracks. After receiving sponsorship from Brand Source he had an engine problem at the end of the race. When he blew up, his car was nearly destroyed on pit road as an accident happened on the tri-oval and Michael Waltrip’s car came across onto pit road, also nearly hitting the pace car as well.
His son Coleman Pressley won the 2010 UARA-Stars championship and raced sporadically in NASCAR. He currently serves as Brad Keselowski’s spotter.
Pressley replaced Harry Gant as the driver of the #33 car that Leo Jackson Motorsports owned in Cup in 1995. He finished in the top ten and was second to Ricky Craven as Rookie of The Year. He finished in the top five again the following year. Jackson decided to retire and sold his operation, along with Andy Petree, as crew chief. Pressley was released after running just one race for his new owners. However, he was able to get a ride with Diamond Ridge Motorsports. Pressley ran just ten races in 1997 for Diamond Ridge, finishing 14th. He was then abruptly fired. The younger Pressley was naturally drawn to the sport by his father, Bob. His brother Charley was a long-serving crew chief at the NASCAR level. Pressley started running at New Asheville Speedway, Greenville-Pickens Speedway, and won championships at both tracks. He won 150 races in the Southeast’s Late Model Series. Pressley finished 26th in the Busch Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1984. Pressley won his only twelfth series race at Orange County Speedway five years later. From 1991 to 1994, he ran full seasons. His best year was 1992 when he won races while finishing fifth in points. He ran three Winston Cup Series races in 1994 in a Manheim Auctions sponsored car. His best finish was a 31st place at Charlotte.
In 1990, Pressley was involved with Michael Waltrip’s horrible Bristol crash. He tapped Waltrip from behind and sent Waltrip’s #30 Kool Aid car into a fence. The car exploded on impact.
At the end of 2001, Pressley was released from Jasper, and he tackled on a new venture, the Craftsman Truck Series. He signed with Bobby Hamilton Racing and won his Truck Series debut at Daytona International Speedway. He also ran the season opening Daytona 500 in Cup for what was the last race for Melling Racing, finishing 22nd. In 2003, Pressley moved to HT Motorsports in the Trucks, finishing 12th in points. He returned to the Busch Series to drive the 47 again for ST Motorsports, finishing in the top-ten twice, before moving back to the trucks with HT in 2005, finishing 20th in the standings.
