Mihaly was Artist in Residence at Washington National Cathedral from 1996 to
- During this time, Mihaly tried to make an angel out of a Vermont marble block weighing 24,000 pounds (11,000 kilogram). Mihaly was unable to work after the cathedral saw the scaffolding and stone as an eyesore. Mihaly filed a small-claims lawsuit against the cathedral for breach of contract.
Mihaly was commissioned by Duke University to create the first gargoyles on Duke’s Gothic-styled West Campus in 2002. This was to honor Aubrey McClendon and Kathleen McClendon who donated $5.5 million for a new dorm. There are more than 100 gargoyles perched on buildings at the Gothic West Campus. However, Mihaly’s new sculptures were not appreciated by the wealthy donors to whom they were meant to be a tribute and were later removed from the building.
Client Elizabeth Edwards and her husband, Senator John Edwards, commissioned Mihaly to carve the headstone of their deceased son, Wade, out of a 24,000 pound block of Vermont marble. Edwards was “enchanted and confused” by the “weird and wonderful” artist, yet felt the sculpture of an angel caressing her child was “extraordinary”. The 10-foot (3.0 m) tall monument is in Raleigh’s Historic Oakwood Cemetery. Mihaly also designed the monument in Historic Oakwood Cemetery for Edwards after her death in 2010 from breast cancer.
