McCullum was appointed assistant coach of the Georgia Tech men’s basketball team in 2010 under Paul Hewitt. McCullum left Hewitt’s team and joined Dana Altman’s Oregon staff as an assistant coach.
Lee Roy Selmon, South Florida’s athletic director, hired McCullum as the head men’s basketball coach on April 18, 2003. McCullum went 40-76 in four seasons and was fired on March 9, 2007, after the 2006-07 season.

McCullum started his coaching career in high school before he was hired by South Alabama to become a college coach in 1983. McCullum spent a year with the Jaguars before moving to Samford in 1984. He returned to South Alabama as an assistant coach until 1987. McCullum then joined the Southern Illinois staff from 1988 to 1989, before becoming an assistant coach at Kansas State in 1990. McCullum was an assistant to Kruger in Florida from 1991 to 1996. He then worked again under Kruger at Illinois between 1996 and 2000.
McCullum was appointed head coach of Western Michigan in 2000. He compiled a record of 44-45 in three seasons, which included a berth at the 2003 NIT.
McCullum was named head coach at Florida A&M on May 16, 2017.
