Georgia Tech offered Lavette a football scholarship. He was a freshman and was the third-leading rusher in the ACC (866 yards), third in receiving with 45 receptions, first in all purposes yards and first in kickoff return yards. His 307. receiving yards were the most impressive on the team. Lavette’s fourth quarter touchdown against the University of Alabama (his second of that game) was the culmination of an 80-yard touchdown drive. The Yellow Jackets would lose the rest of their games, and go 1-10 for the year. This was Georgia Tech’s first win over the Tide football team since 1962. He rushed for 866 yards and had 188 carries. There were 7 rushing touchdowns, 45 catches for 307 yards and 45 catches.
The Philadelphia Eagles claimed him off waivers on November 4, 1987. After being inactive for two games, he was able to play in one game against St. Louis Cardinals. He returned 2 kickoffs for 37 yard. He was released December 11.
On March 22, 1988, he signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons. He was cut on August 29.
In 1990, he was inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame.

Robert Lee Lavette, born September 8, 1963, is an American football running back who played in the National Football League for both the Dallas Cowboys (NFL) and the Philadelphia Eagles. He played college football for Georgia Institute of Technology.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Lavette in the fourth round (103rd overall), of the 1985 NFL Draft. In the 1985 USFL Territorial Draft, he was also selected for the Jacksonville Bulls. He was a rookie and backed Tony Dorsett. He made 34 kickoff returns for 682 yards. After sustaining a knee injury while covering a kickoff against Philadelphia Eagles, he was put on the injured reserve on December 4.
In 1987, after the players went on a strike on the third week of the season, those contests were canceled (reducing the 16-game season to 15) and the NFL decided that the games would be played with replacement players. He crossed the picket line on October 7 and appeared in 2 games as the third-string running back. He had one reception for 6 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles and 2 kickoff returns for 32 yards against the Washington Redskins. He played a total of 4 games in the season, before being waived on November 3.
