Robert Joseph Kral was born in Medindie (South Australia) on 5 July 1967. He began to play the piano and drums at the age of four. He began writing music for full orchestra at the age of fifteen, and the symphonic piece “The Revival of Zion”. He completed a Bachelor of Music at the Elder Conservatorium of the University of Adelaide. Tristram Cary, a British-born film composer, taught him part of his degree. Kral later stated that he was most interested in creating atmospheres and moods for stories. He also noted that he has always been fascinated by the way movies can affect emotions, in large part due to a good soundtrack. After graduating from university, he worked as a sound engineer for Channel Nine and the South Australian Film Corporation. He began to compose music for medical documentaries in 1988. His first project was Thalassaemia: A Relative Chance. This instructional video on “the genetics of Thalassaemia”, which he composed and performed.
Kral applied to work with Mike Post (a US TV music composer), but was accepted by Christophe Beck, Post’s associate. Beck had starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s second season, 1998. He used Kral to ghost-write the script. Beck asked Kral for help on his new spin-off series Angel. It aired in October 1999. Matthew Mills describes Kral as belonging to the “Christophe Beck school” along with other composers from Buffy/Angel. During season 1, Beck and Kral collaborated, sometimes co-composing. Kral continued to compose independently during seasons 2 through 5, while Beck concentrated on Buffy/Angel projects. Angel completed its final season in May 2004.
Kral’s work in 2008 included scoring The Haunting in Connecticut, for Gold Circle Films / Lionsgate, which was released in theatres in March 2009 to a domestic US opening weekend of $25 million, and Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) for Warner Bros. Animation (DVD feature film). His 2009 scores included the Scooby Doo animated feature for WB animation: Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo (aired in 2010). Kral scored the related animated TV series, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010–13) and WB animated DVD feature, Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare in 2010, with DVD productions of Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur (2011) and Superman vs. The Elite (2012), “Scooby Doo! Stage Fright!” (2013) and “Batman: Assault on Arkham” (2014). Additional soundtrack CD releases include Superman: Doomsday (2007), Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) and “Batman: Assault on Arkham” (2014). In 2012 he scored a TV movie, Fatal Honeymoon, which dramatised the death of Tina Watson.
Kral was a resident of Pasadena since September 1997. He then moved to Rolling Hills Estates in 2003. Kral is married Alison Houghton Kral who is a theological writer. The couple has a daughter, and a son. He told Kevin Zimmerman from SESAC Magazine in 2012 that it was important that the compositions sound authentic to him. I am glad that I took piano lessons because so much of the work now comes from putting music into sequence programs via MIDI keyboard. Robert Joseph Kral, born 5 July 1967, is an Australian television and film composer. He is most well-known for his music compositions for animated WB productions, including horror and superhero. He was the TV series’ music composer for Angel, a spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and most of the series (1999-2004), Seasons 1-5. A soundtrack album entitled Angel: Live Fast and Die Never was released in February 2005. Kral composed 18 of the 25 tracks. He also composed the music for the TV series Miracles (2003), ABC / Touchstone and Jake 2.0 (2003-04), Duck Dodgers (203-05) for Warner Bros. Animation, The Inside (2006) for Fox Television and The Lost Room (2006) for Lionsgate/ Sci Fi. He met Lolita Ritmanis (an American composer), during his studies. She encouraged him to look for work in Los Angeles. He composed the music for Victoria: Australia’s Garden State (a 30-minute videocassette) in the early 1990s. This was used to promote the state’s tourist attractions. There were also 24 Panorama Australia videos that Kral made covering other Australian cities and regions. Kral studied film scoring at University of Southern California from 1991 to 1992.
In 2000 Kral released a sound collection for use in TV production, Robert J. Kral Collection, on Transition Music, which compiled 21 of his tracks. In February 2005, a soundtrack album, Angel: Live Fast, Die Never, was released on Virgin Records, with 18 out of 25 tracks composed by Kral. In 2005, Kral won an Annie Award for Best Music in an Animated Television Production, for his work on the cartoon series, Duck Dodgers (2003–05). In 2007 he scored the music for The Dresden Files (Lionsgate / Sci Fi Channel), the animated DVD feature film Superman: Doomsday for Warner Bros., and co-composed Batman: Gotham Knight (2005) animated DVD feature also for Warner Bros. He described the Superman: Doomsday soundtrack as “So big and epic and emotional. I like material that moves you through a series of emotions”.
