Robert Gardos is one of the most popular and richest Austrian player who was born on January 16, 1979 in Budapest, Hungary. Gardos was conceived in Budapest, Hungary on 16 January 1979. His father Gabor Gardos, a table tennis coach, taught him how to play at his local club Budapesti VSC. Gardos won in 1993 the European Youth Championship in singles as well as in mixed doubles, on the side with Mihaela Encea in cadet. He moved to Austria at the age of 14 and continued competing for Hungary until he turned 18. After a dispute with the Hungarian national teams, Gardos was forced to move to Austria at the age of 14. He could not compete in singles events and was therefore forced to switch his residence to Austria.

Gardos was not selected for the 2012 Summer Olympics singles but an Austrian team with the same lineup was. The team defeated eventual bronze medalist Germany in the first round, with an easy win (Egypt 3-0). They lost the second round without winning any matches (0-3), and finished tied-fifth.

In June 2015, he competed in the inaugural European Games, for Austria in table tennis, more specifically, Men’s team with Stefan Fegerl and Daniel Habesohn. He earned a bronze medal.

Gardos qualified for and competed in the 2017 World Table Tennis Championships, seeded at number 42. In the first round, he defeated Chew Zhe Yu of Singapore (4-2), before losing to Chinese player, and number 4 seed Zhang Jike, (2-4).

Robert Gardos has been practicing at the Werner Schlager Academy, Schwechat, Austria since its opening in 2011.

Robert Gardos, Hungarian pronunciation: Gardos Robert; born 16 January 1979, Budapest) is an Austrian-born Hungarian table tennis player. He was also a European Champion and Olympic participant. He is a member of Chartres ASTT, a French club. He is currently ranked no. 48 players in the world.

Gardos also attended two Olympic Games in 2008, 2012 and 2013. Gardos was also present at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was defeated in round two by Zoran Primorac and finished tied-33rd. Austria (Robert Gardos (Chen Weixing), Werner Schlager) was just short of a medal in the team event. They lost to South Korea (Oh Sang Eun, Ryu Sung-Min and Yoon Jae Young) in the bronze final with a scoreline of 1-3.

Gardos, who is right-handed, began competing for Austria after the three year international suspension for country changing was lifted. He had several success at Table Tennis European Championships, most notably winning the doubles event of the 2012 edition with Daniel Habeson. One year later the duo finished second in the same event having lost the final against Wang Zeng Yi and Tan Ruiwu. In singles, Gardos’ best performance came in 2008 in St. Petersburg by finishing third.
