Espeseth participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He was also an alternate member of the US rowing team at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Douglas Herland, Espeseth’s teammates, and Kevin Still won bronze in the Men’s Pair with Coxswain (2+), with a time 7:12.81 at 1984 Summer Olympics.
He was first in the coxless 4-boat at the 1986 World Championships, Nottingham, England. He took third in the next event, Copenhagen, Denmark. He was one of the favourites to win the coxed couple in 1988 Summer Olympics, along with Daniel Lyons. However, he became ill and couldn’t compete.
