In 2008 he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 1996 Summer Olympics 4×100 relay team.
The men’s 4×100 relay team from Canada was not selected at the Atlanta Olympics despite having won the most prestigious titles the previous three years, as well as the 1995 World Championships. The United States team of Tim Harden and Michael Marsh, Dennis Mitchell, and Jon Drummond claimed that they would beat Canada in the Olympics. However, the Canadian 4×100 relay team beat them by nearly half a second in the final to win the gold medal in national record time. Esmie wasn’t originally scheduled to race with the relay team because of politics. Esmie was ranked third in Canada prior to the relay started but the team was in disarray and Esmie was replaced by Carlton Chambers on the night before the race. Chambers had sustained a groin injury during the 200 m.
