Robert Chisholm is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 31, 1957 in London, England, United Kingdom. Robert Lawrence Chisholm, a former trade unionist, and politician from Nova Scotia (Canada) was born August 31, 1957. From 1991 to 2003, he represented Halifax Atlantic in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In 1996, he succeeded Alexa McDonough to the leadership of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party. From 1998 to 1999, he was the leader of the Official Opposition at the Nova Scotia Legislature. After establishing a consulting company, he was also co-chair of 2010-11 United Way of Halifax Region campaign and served on the Board of Governors of Dalhousie University. Chisholm was elected Member of Parliament in Nova Scotia for the Dartmouth–Cole Harbour riding on May 2, 2011. He was a member the Official Opposition and served as the Critic of Fisheries and Oceans and the Deputy Critic on Employment Insurance, until his defeat at the 2015 election.
The Liberal government was overthrown by a motion against confidence from the Conservatives 15 months later. This forced a 1999 election. During the campaign it was discovered that Chisholm was convicted of driving under the influence when he was 19. The campaign saw eight seats being lost by the NDP, with the Conservatives taking the third place. The NDP was officially in opposition to the Liberals during this time, as they both had 11 seats. After Russell MacLellan’s resignation and the subsequent election by Progressive Conservative Cecil Clark (which gave the NDP 11 more seats than the Liberals), the NDP was made the sole official opposition.
On January 18, 2011, Chisholm announced that he would seek the New Democratic Party nomination in Dartmouth—Cole Harbour for the 2011 federal election, and was officially nominated on January 25. On May 2, 2011, he was elected, winning 15,661 votes and defeating Liberal Party of Canada incumbent Mike Savage.
Following the death of federal NDP leader Jack Layton, Chisholm was a candidate in the 2012 New Democratic Party leadership election, but after speaking English during a leadership debate in French on account of his lack of fluency in the latter language, he withdrew in December 2011 and subsequently endorsed Thomas Mulcair.
After the campaign, Chisholm abruptly resigned as the leader at the November 6 NSNDP provincial council meeting. He stated that he wanted more time with his loved ones and couldn’t continue to subject them to ten years of political life. He was still an MLA in the Legislature, and he remained as the leader until a new one was elected. Helen MacDonald succeeded him in 2000. After she failed to win a seat, Darrell Dexter became the leader of the House in 2001. Chisholm didn’t run for re-election in the 2003 provincial election as an MLA.

In 1997, the NDP won six of Nova Scotia’s 11 electoral districts. This was a surprising electoral success. The NDP’s newfound electoral success boded well to its provincial party, which was able take advantage of this new wave of popularity. The Nova Scotia NDP was not considered a contender to form a provincial government before 1997.
Chisholm led the NDP to a record number of 19 seats (out of 52 seats in the House of Assembly) in 1998’s provincial election. This put them in a tie against the Liberal Party. Because the Progressive Conservatives held 14 of the remaining seats, the third-place Liberals supported them, they were able to keep their power. The Official Opposition was formed by the NDP. This marks the first time that they have held that position. In 1949, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, (CCF) were the last democratic socialist parties to hold this title.
After the 2003 provincial election, Chisholm returned to the labour movement and worked as researcher for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Since 2004, he has been a member of Dalhousie University’s board of governors. In 2007, he became CUPE’s Regional Director for the Atlantic Region. In the spring of 2009, he started a consulting firm with his wife Paula Simon: Simon Chisholm Consulting.
