Winters was born in East Kilbride, on the 4th of November 1974. He began his football career at Muirend, an amateur club. His younger brother David was also born in 1983.

Winters left in 2002 after his contract expired. He played one match at Luton Town before moving to Norway. Winters declared on 31 October that he was no longer motivated to play for SK Brann after several seasons of hinting about leaving Bergen. He also stated that he wanted to leave the club in January. Winters stated that he was looking for a club in Scotland but also suggested that he would like to join an English Championship club. Winters, who had no contract offer, returned to SK Brann in order to make peace and fulfill his contract until December 2007. Winters’ Scottish teammate Charlie Miller left and joined Lierse in Belgium.

After an impressive performance as a trialist against Falkirk, Winters signed a professional contract with Livingston on 28 August 2009.

Winters played for Icelandic club Grindavík in 2011. He scored on his debut against Thor. He then played for Alloa Athletic during the 2011–12 season and helped them win the Scottish Third Division championship. In the summer of 2012, Winters signed for Peterhead, before being released in February 2013 and going on a 3-game trial with Albion Rovers. He chose not to sign a contract at the expiration of the trial. He joined Dumbarton in March 2013.

Winters began his career in Scotland. He played for Dundee United from 1992 to 1997, and Aberdeen between 1998-2002. After a brief spell with Luton Town in England, Winters moved to Norway and played for Brann between 2002-2008 where he won both the Norwegian Cup as well as the Norwegian Premier League.

Robert Winters, a Scottish footballer, was born 4 November 1974. He plays as a striker at Cumbernauld United’s junior club in the West of Scotland Super League First Division. In 1999, he made one appearance in the Scotland national soccer team.

Winters started his senior career in 1992 with Dundee United. He played 118 league matches for the club and scored 27 goals. The move to Aberdeen was inevitable. In exchange for Winters, Billy Dodds and cash came to Tannadice. With 41 goals in 132 league games, his time at Pittodrie was a successful one. Winters was a substitute in the second minute for injured goalkeeper Jim Leighton. He had a broken cheekbone and was unable to play. Winters played almost the entire match in an unfamiliar spot and scored four goals to help Rangers defeat 4-0.

Winters left Brann after the 2008 season, to join his family who had moved back to Scotland during the summer, due to his children starting school. Winters played 178 matches for Brann, scoring 70 goals. He signed a short-term deal with Clyde until the end of the season in April 2009. Winters was released by Clyde in June 2009 along with the rest of the out of contract players, due to the club’s financial position.
