He was born in Taunton but moved to Norfolk at an early age. When he was four years old, he recalled playing cricket in his back yard. He attended Taverham Hall prep school and then boarding at Framlingham College, Suffolk. At just 13 years old, he made his senior cricket debut for Swardeston. He scored five runs. He was awarded a spot on the Northants Academy’s 2005 roster after a remarkable school career that included an average of 94.70 at Framlingham as a 15 year-old and a double century against MCC. He played regularly for Northamptonshire’s under-17’s, and then, at the age of 19, for the second XI. He also played under-17 for England and captained Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC), under-18s.
Newton, then 19, made his one-day debut in Northamptonshire against Middlesex on September 2009. He scored seven runs. After his impressive performance against Essex in the one-day fifty, and his decent score in his first-class match against Worcestershire, people started to notice his talent in 2010. In the last game of the 2010 season, he scored his first century against Leicestershire.
