McElwee joined Met Office in 1982 as a weather observer. He spent most of the eight years at Netheravon, an Army Air Corps base on Salisbury Plain, observing weather conditions. He then trained as a forecaster, and worked at East Anglian airbases.
He joined the BBC Weather Centre May 1991 and made his debut in July 1991. He is a Fellow in the Royal Meteorological Society. He lived in 2009 with Rosanne MacMillan, his wife (previously a continuity broadcaster for BBC TV), and their sons in Buckinghamshire.
