Robert Gerard Kerin, born 4 January 1954, is an ex-South Australian politician. He was Premier of South Australia between 22 October 2001 and 5 March 2002. He represented the South Australian Division of The Liberal Party of Australia. From 7 July 1998 to his election as Premier, he was also Deputy Premier. He then became leader of the opposition, and lost the government.
The Liberals lost the 2006 election with a 7.7 percent swing against them. Kerin resigned as Liberal leader after that defeat, but he remained in parliament. Iain Evans succeeded him as Liberal leader.
Kerin was elected to office six months prior to the 2002 election. Labor won two seats from the Liberals in that election. Another hung parliament resulted. The Liberals won 50.9 per cent of the two-party vote, while Labor was only one seat shy of a majority. Four conservative crossbenchers, one National and three independents, remained in power. In a surprising move, Peter Lewis announced that he would support Mike Rann and Labor to form a minority government. This was in exchange for being elected Speaker of the House of Assembly. Kerin was shocked to learn this. He argued that the Liberals still had the mandate to govern, since they had received a majority vote from the two-party coalition. Rann had to prove that he had a majority of the Assembly’s working members, or Kerin would not be allowed to remain in office. Kerin was able to act as he wanted. In 2007, Kerin announced he would not be seeking re-election at the 2010 election. Kerin announced on 11 November 2008 that he would resign from parliament immediately rather than at the next election. This triggered the 2009 Frome by-election. Independent Geoff Brock won the seat in a very close contest, with his presence to later deny the Liberals government at the 2014 election.
