His heart attack caused him to die in May 1999, at 46 years old.
Gretton owned the Rob’s Records record label and was a co-founder at The Hacienda nightclub. He founded Manchester Records in 1995 to sign Gabrielle’s Wish, and Kill Laura from Liverpool. Jane Weaver was the lead singer.

Gretton was first involved in the Manchester scene when he contributed PS200 towards co-finance Slaughter & the Dogs’ first single, the punk rock classic “Cranked Up Really High”. Gretton joined Factory Records in 1979 and brought many bands to the label. These included Section 25, Crispy Ambulance (X-O-Dus), Crispy Ambulances, Stockholm Monsters. Minny Pops. The Names. Quando Quango. 52nd Street. Happy Mondays.
Gretton was portrayed by Paddy Considine in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, which dramatized the rise and fall of Factory Records, and by Toby Kebbell in the 2007 film Control, a biopic of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.
