Bonnet began his career as a freelance assistant at Radio Brighton in 1978. He then joined the BBC as a producer on Radio Norfolk in 1980. Later, he would be assigned to Radio 1’s news program Newsbeat. In the fall of 1982, he began broadcasting for BBC Sport’s radio division and BBC East in 1985. Bonnet joined the BBC News team as a reporter and correspondent in February 1987. Bonnet won the 1993 RTS Sports Reporter of the Year award for his report on Sydney’s win at the 2000 Olympic Games. This was a 9 O’Clock bulletin. Bonnet joined BBC Breakfast in September 1995 as their sports reporter, until he resigned in October 2005.
