Bolden arrived on campus in June and beat two sophomores, Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome, as well as another highly-recruited freshman, Paul Jones to be the starting quarterback for Youngstown State’s first game of 2010. Bolden was the first true freshman quarterback to begin the season under Joe Paterno. He also became the first since Wally Richardson (1992) to start any game in their freshman season. Bolden was also Penn State’s first true freshman quarterback to open the season since Shorty Miller in 1910. Paterno stated that Bolden was the right choice for the starting quarterback because he had an arm and a lot of poise. He did certain things better than other players on more occasions.
