Robert Craig Bolden, Jr. was born February 20, 1992. He is an American football quarterback. He attended St. Mary’s Preparatory school in Orchard Lake (Michigan) and played college football for Penn State Nittany Lions between 2010 and 2011. Bolden transferred to Louisiana State University, where he was a member the LSU football team between 2012 and 2013. Bolden transferred to Louisiana State University again, and was a member the LSU football team from 2012 to 2013.

Rob Bolden Sr., announced the plans of his son to transfer from Penn State on January 2, 2011. Bolden met his father in State College, Pennsylvania with Jay Paterno, head coach, and quarterbacks coach, to discuss the possibility of transferring. Joe Paterno told Bolden that he wouldn’t grant a release from the scholarship. Bolden chose to stay at Penn State, and not transfer. Bolden took McGloin’s place in the TicketCity Bowl in Houston on January 2, 2012. He had been hurt in a fight with Curtis Drake in the locker room. Bolden and the Nittany Lions lost 30-14. Bolden completed 7 of 26 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown pass. He also had three interceptions. Bolden also ran six times for 16 yard.

In the first depth chart released by new head coach Bill O’Brien after spring practices, Bolden was listed as the third-string quarterback, behind McGloin and Jones. After being released from his scholarship, Bolden took an official visit to LSU on July 29, 2012. Because of the NCAA’s sanctions on Penn State in the wake of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal, Bolden was free to transfer to any FBS program without limitation.

Bolden did not see the field during the 2013 season and was even changed to a wide receiver in the spring of 2014 before he transferred to Eastern Michigan to finish his college career close to home.

Bolden arrived on campus in June and beat two sophomores, Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome, as well as another highly-recruited freshman, Paul Jones to be the starting quarterback for Youngstown State’s first game of 2010. Bolden was the first true freshman quarterback to begin the season under Joe Paterno. He also became the first since Wally Richardson (1992) to start any game in their freshman season. Bolden was also Penn State’s first true freshman quarterback to open the season since Shorty Miller in 1910. Paterno stated that Bolden was the right choice for the starting quarterback because he had an arm and a lot of poise. He did certain things better than other players on more occasions. There were days when I didn’t know who I wanted to be on the field.
