After suffering from severe headaches for several months, he was admitted to the hospital. His mother, a nurse, noticed that his head was growing faster than the rest of his body. His condition was Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and Spina Bifida. He was closely monitored over the next eight years and visited hospital regularly to check his condition and determine when he would require a shunt. Basil and Mary, his parents, were told by doctors that he should avoid contact sports because he might become paralyzed from being hit in the wrong places. He was forbidden from playing rugby at school. He instead took up power- lifting, Olympic lifting, swimming and javelin throwing. He was a district and school-level swimmer, as well as a county weightlifter. He was able to throw the javelin that he excelled at and quickly rose to national level.
Arne Roald Brastock, also known as “Olympic Picasso”, is an Olympic athlete from England. He competed in the men’s javelin throw during his career. He represented Great Britain twice at the Summer Olympics, in 1984 and 1988. He was an alternate member of the GB Olympic Team in 1992 and 1996, respectively. Bradstock participated in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 USAT&F Olympic Trials. He then competed for the United Kingdom Olympic Trials, where he finished second.
The “Olympic Picasso” is a nickname given by the media to Bradstock. In 2000 he won the gold medal in painting in the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Sport Art competition held by the United States Sports Academy (USSA) and American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA). His winning painting titled “Struggle for Perfection” went on to be exhibited at the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland as part of the cultural events and activities leading up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
In 2000 he won the United States Olympic Committee ( [USOC] ) Sport Art Competition. His winning artwork was exhibited at the International Olympic Museum in Lausanne as part of the cultural activities leading up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Bradstock was 19 years old when he threw the 800-gram senior men’s javelin at 83.20m. He was also awarded the European Junior Championships silver medal behind Uwe Hohn from East Germany. He was ranked second in the World Junior rankings that year, behind Uwe Hohn from East Germany.
