Ritu Rani was born in Haryana on 29/12/1991. She attended the Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sr. Secondary School in Shahabad Markanda (Haryana). At the age of 9, she began playing hockey and was trained at Shahbad Hockey Academy, Shahabad Markanda. Rani worked with Indian Railways from 1994 to 2014. She then joined the Haryana Police. Rani was a student at Shahbad Hockey Academy in Shahabad.

Rani was the leader of the team that won the Round 2 of 2014-15 Women’s FIH Hockey World League Rani steered the team to the top and qualified for the next stage. Rani also led the team to the World League Semifinals in Antwerp, where they finished fifth behind Japan, which was higher in classification. Her captaincy saw the Indian women’s field hockey team qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first time they have qualified since 1980 Summer Olympics.

Since I was 10, I have dreamed of participating in the Olympics. It’s an honor to lead this group. Many of these girls won medals at the junior world cup. We have learned from our experience against the best teams what we can expect in Rio. Even our seniors tried hard to make it, but were unable to overcome South Africa’s final hurdle. This team is something special.
