McGrath was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Barnard College in 1981 and a Masters of Public Administration in 1982 from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. McGrath completed her Ph.D. in 1993 at The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania). Her dissertation was entitled Developing New Competence within Established Organizations. This is consistent with her longstanding interest and passion for corporate ventures as well as innovation.
McGrath began her career in politics and government. She also founded two startups. McGrath graduated from Columbia in 1993 as an assistant professor of management. In 1998 she was promoted to associate professor of Management and in 2012, she became a full professor at the Faculty of Executive Education. She was elected as the 2014 Deputy Dean of Strategic Management Society Fellows
In 2009, she was elected fellow of the Strategic Management Society, and in 2013 of the International Academy of Management. In 2013 she also received the Thinkers50 Distinguished Achievement Award in Strategy. She was named one of the top 20 thinkers in 2011, and one of the top 10 thinkers in 2013 by Thinkers50.
