Cosby made the move to MSNBC in 2005 to host a weeknight primetime show, Rita Cosby Direct. The show was the network’s most-watched. She also did extensive reporting for other NBC programs like The Today Show. For the network, she traveled extensively, reporting live from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast to report on Hurricanes Katrina/Rita. She also reported from the war zones in Afghanistan and along U.S.-Mexico borders. She was able to conduct the last broadcast interview of Stanley Williams, a former Crips gang leader and was among the few journalists who witnessed his execution at San Quentin Prison. She uncovered a story of heroism and courage in her own family, detailing her father’s youth as a Polish Resistance fighter who battled the Nazis during the Warsaw Uprising in World War II. Senator John McCain called it, “a loving, poignant tribute to her P.O.W. father and freedom.” Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said it’s “a beautiful tribute to the strength of the human spirit.” Lech Wałęsa, former President of Poland, said of Cosby’s father, “One of Poland’s great treasures has now been found.” In 2010, a resolution was passed in the South Carolina Legislature honoring Rita Cosby and her father. The book has raised money for the USO to help wounded soldiers and their families.

Cosby was also a national sensation for her interviews of boxer Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, and David Berkowitz, a convicted serial killer. Berkowitz, “The Son of Sam,” wrote to Cosby during the Washington, D.C., sniper shootings of October 2002. Cosby also reported the license plates numbers and names of the sniper suspects as the story progressed. Cosby’s interview of Anne Marie Smith, a flight attendant, led to a U.S. Attorney’s Office probe into Rep. Gary Condit’s obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
