Wataya was a Japanese citizen. Her mother was an English professor at university, while her father was a clothes manufacturer. She told her parents at 17 that she was studying for her university entrance exams. But she was actually working on her first novella, Insutoru (Install). Insutoru was awarded the 38th Bungei prize in 2001. Later, it was adapted into a film with the same title in 2004 starring AyaUeto.
Wataya didn’t immediately write any more novels after receiving the Akutagawa prize, but she did work in Kyoto as a waitress and a sales clerk in a department shop. With her 2007 novel Yume wo ataeru (“Give Me a Dream”), she returned to writing. In Japan, her 2010 novel Katte ni furuetero (“Tremble all You Want”) became a bestseller. Akiko Ohku directed the film adaptation of Katte ni furuetero and it won the festival’s Audience Award.
