Hakkarainen was a Finnish citizen, born in Espoo. Since she was 15, Hakkarainen has been a member of the Finnish National Ladies Team. She won the Nordic Girls Championship twice, the Scottish Girls Stroke Play Championship in 1996 and the Greek Ladies Championship in 1996. She also placed 3rd in the British Girls Championship in 1995. She represented Finland at the 1994 and 1996 Espirito Sante Trophy World Amateur Golf Team Championships.
Hakkarainen became a professional golfer at just 19 years old in 1996. Although it may seem too young, she believed that it was a crucial next step in her career. She won her maiden Nedbank Women’s Golf Tour victory in South Africa 2002. She continued to play strong on the Swedish Telia Tour, winning two tournaments (Oijared Ladies Open and Swedish Match Play) and the Telia Tour’s Order of the Merit. She won her maiden title on the Ladies European Tour 2006 in Tenerife. She continued to play strong all season, finishing 9th on Ladies European Tour Order of Merit. She began to have balance issues during her best season and was forced to quit competitive tournament golf for two years.
In 2009 Hakkarainen made a comeback to Ladies European Tour after two years of sickness mystery, and her best finish was 5th on the Spanish Ladies Open.
