After being released from AFC Wimbledon earlier that month, Wellard signed a two year contract with The U’s. U’s boss JezGeorge was quick to sign the midfielder in the summer transfer window. This deal saw Wellard return to Abbey Stadium permanently after a successful loan spell in February 2011.
He signed for Sutton United in July 2014, and made his debut against Winchester City in a pre-season friendly.
In May 2015, he signed for National League side Welling United on a free transfer.

Born in Hammersmith, London, Wellard is a graduate of Hammersmith High School. Wellard was a midfielder in the Ashford Town (Middlesex), and made his debut against the Stourport Swifts Tangerines on January 8, 2005 as a late substitute for Anthony Eggington. He made 190 appearances for Ashford Town, including the goal that won the Surrey Senior Cup final in 2009. Wellard also served as groundsman at Short Lane during his time at the club. AFC Wimbledon rejected a transfer bid in 2008 which was considered ‘derisory’. The Dons’ second bid, which was for an undisclosed amount plus add-ons, was successful the next summer. Wellard was the only player to ever have commanded an Ashford transfer fee, the other two being Richard Butler and Dannie Bulman.
Wellard was a regular player in the AFC Wimbledon side. He made 43 appearances during his first season with the Dons, which didn’t make it to the Conference play-offs. After James Mulley’s arrival, Wellard saw his second season at the club see him fall in the central midfield pecking order. Wellard was loaned to Cambridge United, a Conference side, on a one-month loan. Terry Brown recalled Wellard from his loan early due to an injury at Kingsmeadow. He was able to regain his place in Dons’ team and played in the final of the Conference Play- off against Luton Town in 2011. This win saw the Dons earn a spot in the Football League. Wellard was let go by the club in May 2012 due to the expiry his contract.
After a successful loan spell at Salisbury, he returned permanently, signing a contract until the end of the 2013–14 season. He featured in the squad regularly, and scored a vital free kick in the Conference South play-off final against Dover Athletic.
