Ricky Powers is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on November 30, 1970 in Akron, Ohio, United States. Richard Powers, born November 30, 1970, is a former runningback in the National Football League (NFL), for the Cleveland Browns. He was also a former co-captain of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team. He had a brief stint with the Browns in the NFL’s final season before the team moved to Baltimore. He was lost in the shuffle after the Browns moved to Baltimore, and changed coaches. He set the Michigan football freshman record for rushing in college and was the leading rusher during Desmond Howard’s Heisman trophy-winning season as a sophomore. He was a member three consecutive Big Ten Conference football champion teams while with the Wolverines. He was the Parade All-American star in high school and ran back the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA), two-time Ohio High School Athletic Association football championship team at Buchtel High School. He has since returned to coaching football and baseball.
Powers was 6’1″ (1.83m) tall and weighed 213 lbs (96.6 kg). He was signed by the Detroit Lions in 1994 as a free agent, but was later waived before the start of the 1994 season. Later that year, he signed with the Cleveland Browns and joined their practice squad. He was a member of the practice squad until he was promoted to the regular roster in the last three games of 1995 National Football League season. He rushed for 51 yards, had one six-yard pass reception and returned three kickoffs for 54 yards. Powers was lost in the shuffle after the 1995 Browns moved to Baltimore. Ted Marchibroda took over as the Browns’ coach. Powers tried his hand at World League of American Football, Ohio Cannon of the brief-lived Regional Football League in 1999 and the Spring Football League after that, but he soon retired.
Powers was both born in Akron and raised there. He led Buchtel High School’s football team to two consecutive OHSAA championships. Powers was also named an All-American high school football player. After leading Buchtel to the 1988 and 1987 Ohio Division II state high schools championships, Powers graduated in 1990. Powers ran for 1,600 yards, 600 of which in playoff games as a sophomore in 1987. He also helped his coach win Summit County Coaches of the Year awards. Powers ran for 1,741 yards with 28 touchdowns in junior season, 289 against Nordonia High School in playoff game and 2,014 yards with 19 touchdowns in senior season. He was the third junior to be named Akron Beacon Journal Player-of-the Year, following Jeff Logan and Chris Spielman. He set a new Championship game record of 206 yards rushing during the season. This was in addition to his 161 yard sophomore Championship game effort. He was awarded All-Ohio Division II. Robert Smith, a Ohio rival, was named USA Today Player of Year. Powers received an honorable mention in their junior years. Powers was on many lists entering his senior season, including The Chicago Sun-Times national top 100 lists and 24-man All-Midwest list, The Times-Picayune Top 25 prospects and USA Today top 13 Ohio players. His senior season concluded with the “Turkey Day City Championship” game. Smith and Smith were the top two football prospects in Ohio in 1989. The Dallas Morning News named Smith Mr. Football (Ohio), while Powers was the top national player. The Detroit Free Press polled 14 experts to determine that Powers was the All-Midwest (Big Ten States: Illinois, Indiana and Iowa as well as Minnesota, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio since Penn State hadn’t yet joined the conference). Powers was also the Offensive Player of the Year in a first-team backfield along with Jerome Bettis, Chris Weinke. Powers was the Akron Beacon Journal’s first two-time Player of the Year. Powers was Parade All-American, and USA Today awarded him first-team All-USA honors. Powers was listed in many publications all over the country as one of the top five to ten national players. Powers was both recruited by the Michigan Wolverines as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Scott Powers, Powers’ older brother was an All-District cornerback. He had recorded nine interceptions and six fumbles recoveryies, as well as four blocked field goals, and three extra points. According to his mother, Ricky Powers made the final decision to transfer to Michigan State or Michigan. Scott, a Sophomore cornerback for Cincinnati Bearcats, was trying to transfer from Michigan State. Scott could only transfer to Michigan State if Ricky selected it, as there was suspicion of tampering. Rosetta Powers, Rosetta’s mother, claimed that Ricky was leaning towards Michigan State before the decision regarding his brother.
Powers, who wore the number 12 for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 1990 to 1993 shared the position of tailback with Jon Vaughn (a freshman) and Tyrone Wheatley (a junior and senior). He was the official starter in the 1990 Michigan Wolverines football game. However, he also set the Michigan freshman record for rushing with 789 yards. This record was broken in 2004 by Mike Hart. He led the Wolverines to three consecutive Big Ten Conference Championships victories that season. They ran 100-yard rushing in four of their final four games, and tied Vaughn’s record with five 100-yard rushes. As a sophomore, he played in eleven of the twelve games and was selected to the All-Big Ten Conference team. He led the team in rush with 1251 yards as a sophomore, but he was also the Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard. The 1991 team won the Big Ten Conference Championship again and produced eighteen National Football League draftees from 1992 to 1995. His offensive numbers in 1992 and 1993 were lower than 1991, because he shared playing time with Tyrone Wheatley. In 1993, however, he was named Michigan Football Cocaptain for a five-time Big Ten Conference football team. Powers is currently ranked 13th on the all time Michigan rushing yards list, with 2680 career yards. Powers earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in kinesiology. The Rose Bowl was attended by both the 1992 and 1991 Conference Champions.
In 2007, Powers assumed the football coaching duties at his high school alma mater, Akron Buchtel High School, where he has been the head baseball coach since 2004. At Buchtel, he inherits a football team that has a tradition of producing major college scholarship athletes and a few professional ones. Recent Buchtel Griffins who have become professional athletes include Antonio Pittman, Charlton Keith, and Ramon Walker. For 2007 and 2008, Buchtel competes in Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II, which is for schools with enrollments of between 365 and 523. Buchtel has qualified for the state tournament 9 times in the past as both a Division II and Division III entrant, but they were not among the 32 teams in the 120 team Division II class to qualify in 2007.
