Ricki Herbert is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on April 10, 1961 in Auckland, Auckland Region, New Zealand. Ricki Lloyd Herbert, CNZM, is a former New Zealand footballer, who was born 10 April 1961. He was the former head coach of New Zealand’s national team and was also the former manager of A-League side Wellington Phoenix. Herbert represented New Zealand at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Spain. He also coached the New Zealand team at the 2010 World Cup. His most recent position in international football was that of head coach for the Milan Miric Maldives national football squad. He is currently the manager of Ba F.C.
Herbert spent 1982 in England with Southampton F.C. where he made several appearances for the reserve and one for the first team. From 1984 to 1986, he also played English football for Wolverhampton Wanderers, making 49 appearances. Tommy Docherty, who was previously Herbert’s manager at Sydney Olympic, signed him. His time at the club was coincident with their slide down the leagues. Herbert was part the team that was relegated in 1985 to the third tier, but he left in March 1986 just before another relegation due to a disagreement with Sammy Chapman.
Herbert’s domestic success attracted attention from NZ football association, and in 1999 he was appointed coach of the under-23 Oly-Whites qualifying campaign for the Sydney Olympics. An appointment of assistant national coach followed in 2001. In 2003 Herbert took charge of the New Zealand U-17 team.
As Director of Technical Development, Herbert was again responsible for New Zealand Olympic campaign in 2004, although they failed to qualify for the finals in Athens.
Herbert represented New Zealand at the age group level. He played for the New Zealand under-20 team and won 61 international caps between 1980-1989. He also scored seven goals.

Herbert is the son of a successful sporting family. His mother Shirley was a champion sprinter, and his father Clive was a professional cyclist. His father, Clive, was also a long-standing football administrator. He represented New Zealand at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico and was a professional trainer for standardbred harness racing horses. Kale Herbert, Herbert’s son is a professional football coach. He works as the head coach at the Ricki Herbert Football Academy as well as Taupo FC, who participate in the WaiBOP Championship.
At 18 years old, Herbert made his international debut with a win over Mexico of 4-0 on 20 August 1980. He also played in 15 matches in the All Whites’ World Cup qualifying campaign in Spain for 1982 FIFA World Cup. Herbert was substituted for the defeat against Scotland but was reinstated to both the starting eleven for Brazil and Soviet Union as New Zealand failed any points in their first World Cup finals appearance.
Herbert began his coaching career at Papakura City AFC in 1990, before taking over at neighbouring Papatoetoe AFC in 1993. From 1996 he took charge of Central United in the National Summer League, finishing mid table in his first season in charge. In both 1997 and 1998, Herbert took Central United to victory in the Chatham Cup and finished a close second in the league. In 1999, New Zealand reverted to separate North Island and South Island leagues, with the winners of each playing off for title of New Zealand Champion. Central United, winners of the North Island Soccer League, defeated the South Island winner, Dunedin Technical, 3–1, after extra time, in the championship final.
