Rickey Foggie is one of the most popular and richest American Football Player who was born on July 15, 1966 in Laurens, South Carolina, United States. Rickey Foggie, born July 15, 1966, is a former gridiron quarterback. Foggie was the Minnesota Golden Gophers’ starting quarterback for four seasons before he went on to play professionally for the Canadian Football League (Arena Football League) and for the Canadian Football League. Foggie is currently the head high school football coach in Red Wing, Minnesota.
Foggie was a popular option quarterback at South Carolina high schools and Lou Holtz recruited him to play collegiately at University of Minnesota. Holtz was going in to replace Arkansas’s powerhouse Arkansas. Foggie was a true freshman and the Gophers had just finished a disappointing 1-10 season under Joe Salem. In Holtz’s inaugural season as coach, the Gophers posted a 4-7 record. Foggie was the signal caller for the first time, and Foggie showed some of his versatility as both a runner as well as passer. This gave Minnesota fans a glimpse at a brighter future. After a two year absence, the Floyd of Rosedale was returned to Minnesota by Chuck Long, who won a surprise victory over Iowa.
Thought of as running quarterback who wouldn’t succeed in the National Football League, Foggie was bypassed in the 1988 NFL Draft. Although many felt he would have a better chance of making the NFL at another position, Foggie opted to remain a quarterback and joined the Canadian Football League. He started out in the CFL with the BC Lions backing up Matt Dunigan (reaching the Grey Cup final with the Lions in 1988), whom he followed to the Toronto Argonauts in 1990, in which he won the Grey Cup in 1991. where he was an instrumental part of the league’s highest scoring team. Foggie later played for the Edmonton Eskimos (winning another Grey Cup title with them in 1993) and the Memphis Mad Dogs in the CFL.
In Foggie’s senior year in 1987, the Gophers again finished 6–5, however, that year they failed to receive a bowl invite.
In 1986, the Gophers were 6-5 and received another invitation to the Liberty Bowl. In this matchup, they lost to Tennessee. Foggie was a better, more mature quarterback. He was helped by Darrell Thompson, a talented freshman running back who became a star that season. The Gophers’ upset at The Big House of Michigan Rose Bowl bound was the highlight of the season. Minnesota won the Little Brown Jug for only the ninth time in nine years.
