Waits was a left-handed pitcher who played in all or part 12 seasons of Major League Baseball (MLB), for the Texas Rangers (1973), Cleveland Indians (1875-83), as well as the Milwaukee Brewers (1983-1985). Waits was the minor league pitching coordinator of the Seattle Mariners before he was named the Mariners’ pitching coach under Lloyd McClendon.

Waits was originally drafted in the fifth round by the Washington Senators during the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft. On September 17, 1973, Waits made his debut pitching for the Texas Rangers. They had already moved from Washington. He was traded to Cleveland Indians along with Jim Bibby and Jackie Brown, as well as cash for Gaylord Perry. Waits, an American League East division champion in his prime, defeated the New York Yankees in their final regular season game in 1978. This forced a one-game playoff between Boston Red Sox and Yankees for the title. The news of the Indians’ win was broadcast on Fenway Park’s television screen.
