Rick Strassman is one of the most popular and richest American author who was born on February 8, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, United States. Strassman was born February 8, 1952 in Los Angeles, California. In 1969, he graduated from Ulysses S. Grant high school in Van Nuys. After two years of undergraduate studies in Zoology at Pomona College, Claremont, he transferred to Stanford University in 1973, and graduated with departmental honors. After completing laboratory research at Stanford he attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York where he received a M.D. with departmental honors. He specialized in psychiatry. He completed his general psychiatry residency in the University of California at Davis. In 1981, he was awarded the Sandoz Award as outstanding graduating resident. He received fellowship training in clinical psychopharmacology and research at the University of California San Diego from 1982 to 1983. After completing his clinical training at UC Davis Medical Center in psychiatry, he was appointed to the faculty of the department of psychiatry. He later became Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine Albuquerque, in 1984. His clinical research at UNM focused on the function of the pineal and led to the discovery of the first human melatonin role. In 1991, he was appointed clinical associate professor in psychiatry. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles in the fields of psychopharmacology, neurology, psychiatry, neuroendocrinology and neuropsychopharmacology.

From 1990 to 1995, Strassman led a U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research team at the University of New Mexico, studying the effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) on human subjects in experimental conditions. His work on pineal hormone melatonin was the basis for his clinical research into DMT.

Strassman characterized biological and psychological effects in his first set of dose-response studies, effects consistent with activation of central and/or peripheral serotonin receptors. His team published a companion article describing psychological effects and preliminary results of a new rating scale, the Hallucinogen Rating Scale, or HRS. The HRS has seen wide acceptance throughout the international research community as a sensitive and specific instrument for measuring psychological effects of a wide variety of psychoactive substances, with over 45 articles documenting its use as of mid-2015. A follow-up DMT study demonstrated lack of tolerance to the psychological effects of repeated closely spaced doses of DMT, making DMT unique among classical psychedelics.

The experiments of Strassman, which were conducted in the General Clinical Research Center of University of New Mexico Hospital between 1990 and 1995, sought to examine experimentally the effects of DMT. This powerful psychedelic drug is found in many plants and all mammal species that have been studied. DMT is found primarily in mammalian lung tissue and is closely related to the neurotransmitter Serotonin as well as the pineal hormone Melatonin.

Strassman started studying Buddhism when he was a teenager, inspired by the visions he saw while taking LSD in the 1970s. Strassman studied Zen Buddhism for 20 years and was laid ordination in a Western Buddhist Buddhist order. He also led a meditation group. His work with DMT made him realize that Buddhist models might not be the best way to understand and integrate the spiritual aspects of DMT.

Strassman’s curiosity in human biology and altered states of consciousness led to him studying the pineal hormone melatonin. In the 1980s there was evidence of highly psychoactive effects. He was a tenured associate professor of psychoiatry at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine, Albuquerque. First, he developed a model for all-night suppression by all-night bright lighting. Then he developed a method for exogenous melanin infusion that reproduced the endogenous levels of melatonin under bright-light conditions. Bright-light suppression of melanin all night suppressed the body’s normal trough temperature at 3-4 a.m., which is the peak melatonin level. In the bright light conditions, where endogenous melatonin had been suppressed, exogenous infusions of melatonin were able to replicate endogenous levels and reestablish the normal trough in core body temperature. However, melatonin’s psychoactive effect was only sedating. He decided to concentrate on DMT for his future work.

More than half of Strassman’s volunteers reported profound encounters/interaction with non-human beings while in a dissociated state. Strassman has conjectured that when a person is approaching death or possibly when in a dream state, the body releases DMT in a relatively large amount, mediating some of the imagery reported by survivors of near-death experiences. However, there are no data correlating endogenous DMT activity to non-drug- related altered states of consciousness. He also has theorized that the pineal gland may form DMT under certain conditions, and in 2013 researchers first reported DMT in the pineal gland microdialysate of rodents.
