Richard Wayne Ownbey, born October 20, 1957 in Corona (California), is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. Between 1982 and 1986, he played parts of four seasons for the New York Mets (now the St. Louis Cardinals) in the majors.
Ownbey was 7-5 and had a 3.63 ERA in his first season with the Louisville Redbirds. 1984 was his first season with the Cardinals. Ownbey went 0-3 in four starts and had a 4.74 ERA. After spending 1985 in the minors Ownbey returned to the Cards in 1986, pitching mostly from the bullpen and going 1-3 with a 3.80 ERA.
Ownbey signed for the Kansas City Royals in 1987 after becoming a free agent following the 1986 season. After suffering from injuries, Ownbey pitched just four innings for the Memphis Chicks, their affiliate in the double-A Southern League, before calling it quits.

Ownbey was a Santa Ana College pitcher in Santa Ana, California. Ownbey attracted the attention of Pittsburgh Pirates who drafted him fourth in the 1979 Major League Baseball draft. He did not sign. He was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round a year later. Ownbey went 9-1 in his first season playing professional baseball, with a 1.80 earned run record for the Lynchburg Mets as well as the Jackson Mets.
Ownbey was the starting pitcher against Cincinnati Reds on August 17, 1982, at Riverfront Stadium. He allowed five runs over five innings and was unable to win the game. Ownbey’s combined record with the Mets was 2-5. He was traded to Neil Allen for Keith Hernandez on June 15, 1983.
