Richard Carlton Matula (pronounced “muh-tuh’-la”) was a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher who played for the Atlanta Braves from 1979 to 1981. He was 6’0″ and 190 lb.

Matula spent the majority of 1981 in the minors with the Richmond Braves. He was a part of 16 games, including 11 starts and a 7.4 record with a 2.97 ERA. He did not fare well in the majors. He made five relief appearances and posted an ERA 6.43. On June 11, he played his last major league game.

Overall, Matula made 66 appearances in the majors (58 starts). He went 19–23 with a 4.41 ERA, striking out 129 batters and walking 126 in 355 innings of work. As a batter, he hit .099 in 111 at bats, walking three times and striking out 48 times.

Matula, then 25, made his major league debut on April 8, 1979. He gave up no walks or earned runs over seven innings, but he lost to Joe Niekro, the Houston Astros’ starter. Niekro pitched a complete shutout.

Matula was born in Wharton in Texas. He was first selected by the Montreal Expos 16th round in 1972 MLB Draft. He decided not to sign and instead enrolled at Sam Houston State University. In the 14th round, 1976 draft, he was drafted by the Braves again. He signed and was assigned to Kingsport Braves. Matula was drafted by the Braves in the 14th round of 1976 draft. He went 3-5 with a 2.63 ERA over 20 appearances (48 innings). Matula also played in three games for Greenwood Braves. He posted a 1-0 record with a 7.50 ERA in six innings. Matula was 4-5 overall with a 3.17 ERA over 54 innings.

Matula split his 1977 time between the Greenwood Braves (his first team) and Savannah Braves (his second). He went 2-1 in Greenwood with a 2.14 ERA over 21 innings. He was 8-5 in Savannah with a 3.24 ERA over 100 innings (22 matches). He was 10-6 overall with a 3.05 ERA.

On March 29, 1982, he was released by the Braves. He played for the Evansville Triplets in the Detroit Tigers organization and Denver Bears in the Texas Rangers organization, going a combined 3–8 with a 5.62 ERA in 36 appearances, (10 starts).
