It was in 1981 that Ferris joined Newcastle United from Lisburn Youth in Northern Ireland and became the club’s youngest debutant, when he was just 16 years old and 294 days. Ferris scored his first premier goal in the game at Bradford City in 1984. An injury to the medial ligament caused him to miss only 14 games before moving towards Barrow F.C., whom helped be the winner of the FA Trophy at Wembley before becoming a local non-league player with Gateshead.
In 1993, he was re-appointed as physiotherapist with Kevin Keegan. The position lasted until and during that time, the doctoral degree was earned with a concentration in History of Ideas. He also pursued a law degree prior to departing to pursue a profession as a barrister. He was admitted to bar the Middle Temple in 2007.
